my solution to errors -50 and 1418/success with brand new shuffles?

I have a new 2g shuffle and am struggling with these notorious error messages. I get error -50 (the device can not be read from or written to) when trying to synch new material and unknown error 1418 when trying to restore.

Below is the only method that works for me. As you will see, it's really convoluted. Maybe it will help some other folks.

1) disconnect ipod
2) restart computer
3) reconnect ipod; choose restore from settings tab
4) let it pretend to restore for a while, then press ctrl altdel and end itunes.
5) right click on my computer, choose manage
6) choose services and applications> services> ipod service
7) click stop
8) disconnect ipod
9) reconnect ipod; it will open in its own window
10) open my computer
11) right click the ipod drive and choose format and then start
12) when formatting is complete, disconnect and then reconnect ipod again.
13) open itunes and choose autofill

This is the only way; I can only have the whole library or nothing at all. It's a royal pain and I am probably going to exchange the **** thing, but I won't be surprised if it keeps happening.

Has this happened to anyone on multiple shuffle 2gs?

If it's a compatability issue with my hardware, I can get that fixed pretty easily (it'll just take some time).

I'm pretty sure that each solution to these problems contains the above elements (it's a question of what order they're in). Happy troubleshooting!
