MBP C2D 17" - Fans Getting on my Nerves

The fan noise on my laptop is driving me insane, not because it is loud - it is actually very quiet but it keeps changing in loudness, even when the computer is sitting idle on desktop.

One second the fan will be fairly quiet and then suddenly it will go a bit louder for 10 seconds and then quiet again or something like that. I wouldn't mind, even if it was loud and it stayed like it but it is really getting to me when I am working in a quiet room and it goes loud, then quieter. And it seems to click in between which I think is the hard disk telling them to start.

Anyone know what could be causing this as it is driving me up the wall?

this sounds like it might be similar to the 'whine' problem that affected earlier MBPs.. my C2D 17" doesn't do it, so you should contact apple and demand a fix.

I have noted over time (this is based on PPC notebooks) that even when sitting idle the temperature goes up over time. The rise in temperature over time would account for the fans speeding up and slowing down. I don't think its a problem at all.

Have you taken all the latest OS and security updates? I was annoyed by the fans - especially when NOT running universal binaries. I downloaded and applied the latest updates and the fans are now behaving "normal."

I get the exact same thing. This is my second C2D and am loathe to return it as I am writing up my thesis. But like u it really gives me the irrates. Furthermore when backing up my files to disc the fans start blasting away. Overall I must say that the Intel experience for me has not been good at all.
