LG UltraFine 5K Display dim each time I startup

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2016) running 10.12.4. At work I have an older Dell display and at home I have a new LG UltraFine 5K Display (I picked it up from Apple mid January 2017). When I travel I turn the power to my laptop off (I don't travel with it hibernated)

If I go to work in the morning and hook it into my work monitor (UCB-C to thunderbolt2 plugged into a Belkin Thunderbolt dock connected to the Dell monitor via HDMI) everything works fine.

When I come home and connect my laptop to my LG monitor using the single USB-C cable that came with the monitor. Every time I start the laptop up in this configuration the LG monitor's brightness is set to the lowest possible setting. (I can barely see anything on the display) .

I set the brightness to where I want it to be for the external monitor but the next time I either restart or power on the laptop it reverts back to the lowest brightness setting.

I've tried turning Night Shift off but I get the same results. This seems to have started when the macOS release with Night Shift was distributed.

Is there anything I can do to keep the brightness setting on the LG monitor set?

Hello Jason,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are having issues with the brightness setting changing when you restart your MacBook Pro. I would start with resetting the NVRAM and SMC on your MacBook Pro. The following support articles will walk you through both of those resets:

How to reset NVRAM on your Mac

Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac

Best regards.

I just want to add to this thread- I have the same problem. I have a maxed-out late 2016 (touch strip) MBP with the 256GB storage, 16GB RAM, Premium Graphics Card, i7 chip. Since the latest software update my 27" LG 5K monitor doesn't remember its profile and turns on at the lowest brightness post reboot. (My MBP was bricked upon the installation of the latest OS X). The Geniuses erased my MBP and successfully installed the new OS X but it now had this problem with the LG monitor- Took it in again and now they sent it off for a new logic board. I'll let you know what happens..

For what it's worth, I've posted a prior reply stating that I have the same problem. I did both the NVRAM and SMC resets per instruction from the tech support at Apple Care. I took my MBP and the "27MD5KA" along with my Magic Trackpad and Magic Keyboard to the Apple Store and they witnessed the problem. I suggested to swap out the cable/ monitor with a floor model but they claimed it had to be the computer hardware. Apple subsequently replaced the logic board and the i7 chip. Unfortunately it still has exactly the same problem(s). Oddly it will sometimes reboot with what seems to be the previously-set brightness, etc, but it's not consistent. Also, during reboot, there are many graphics antics and temporal delays for various things such as "shake to enlarge cursor" and recognition of the bluetooth keyboard/ trackpad. (It can take about three minutes for the "shake to enlarge cursor" function to operate which is very inconvenient). I hope this helps. Let me know if you learn of any clues please as I can't rely on the setup I paid for to perform.

I now suspect this brightness change has to do with the Night Shift setting. If I have Night Shift on the problem occurs, if Night Shift is turned off there is no brightness change issue from one day to the next.

IOW, if Night Shift is on and I put the machine to sleep and later return to it, likely after the Night Shift cycle ends, I find the brightness at max.
