Stop Preview's file open dialog box from appearing?

It seems that with the last update that impacted Preview, something changed where now when launching Preview, it also launches the file open dialog box (a finder box with the files listed). I have zero use for this whatsoever and its really annoying when I want to use Preview for screen captures (as it blocks what I'm trying to capture). I don't see a way to disable this "feature"... is there one?
