Hi
With an Apple Watch first generation or Series 1 model, the watch relies on the paired iPhone for Location Services information, so this must be taken along on the workout in order for a route map to be recorded.
Apple Watch Series 2 models have built-in GPS, so the paired iPhone does not need to be taken along.
If a route map is not being recorded as expected for your Apple Watch, then the following steps may help:
Update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:
On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:
- Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
- In the list of apps beneath, check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
- If each setting is already enabled:
- Try briefly turning off Location Services and then turning it back on again.
- Try briefly changing the setting for Apple Watch Workout to Never and then back to While Using.
Restart both your iPhone and your watch:
- Close the Watch app, Activity app and Health app (if open) on your iPhone:
- Double-click the Home button, then swipe up on each app preview to close it.
- Turn both devices off together, then restart your iPhone first:
