Or

Select a pdf in the Finder and go File -> Get Info

In the Get Info Window Use the 'Open With' tab to select your preferred app, then click on 'Change All' to make it the default.

my computer always opened documents (and everything else, I guess) with Preview. I made a mistake and changed the default to Adobe something or other. I wanted to go back to the original Preview because it was simple and something I am familiar with. I wasn't even thinking about the term "PDF". Did I make a mistake? As you can tell, I am pretty computer-illiterate. Thanks for you understanding.. and for your help

No, you're doing fine, and have made no mistake.

What you're trying to do is change the default PDF reader. You had in the past changed it to an Adobe product, and are now changing it back to Preview (which is what the default would have been had you never installed any Adobe products on your Mac).

Apple has been good about supplying tools to deal with PDFs (Preview). On a Windows machine, I would think Adobe products would be essential to handle PDFs, but not on Apple machines.

So I think you're doing exactly the right thing.
