Problems with the apostrophe

Hey guys,

Every time I type ' it automatically corrects to ´. For example, when I type "I'm" it corrects to "I’m" (it doesn't look so bad here but on apps like iMessage and Word it looks terrible).

I tried deactivating the "smart quotes and dashes" option, but the problem persists. Does any of you know how to fix this?

Thanks!

You may have missed one of the settings. Besides the one in system prefs/keyboard/text, you need to also go in the app to Edit > Substitutions and make sure that Smart Quotes is not checked.

MS Word has its own independent settings for this you need to turn off. (tools > autocorrect > autoformat in 2016)

I don't know how to name the two distinct characters you are referring to, so I'll call the one you want to end up with and claim to be typing "char 1" and the one being substituted in (much to your chagrin) "char 2".

Go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Text and add a replacement there.

I think the appropriate replacement is "Replace char 1 with char 1." It might be "Replace char 2 with char 1."
