Mac Air Turns Off When USB Removed

Hi all, I have an old Mac Air mid-2011 generation but its still going strong. I just was curious if anyone else experiences an issue with their Mac turning off when a USB connection is removed. This issue occurs even after I've ejected an USB or external disk. It does seem limited to my right USB port (and not the left port). While this issue appears intermittent and reproducible, it doesn't happen every time.

I am running Sierra 10.2.4 with a 1.8 Ghz Intel Core i5. I am not sure if this is a design flaw or a software concern, but I did notice it happening more lately in the last few months. I'm just worried it might damage my system with the computer just shutting off, instead of sleep or shut down commands.
