How do I password protect imessage?

best option I can think of would be to put iMessage in a folder and try to hide the app from her and disable notifications. If you need to access just swipe down and type messages. But right now sadly there is no password protect option Aside from the home screen.

Other her than that would suggest getting her an iPad mini to play with and an otter box defender series case.

You don't. You can use a passcode to protect the whole phone.
