siri doesn't read some messages using carplay

I have a new vehicle that has carplay. I noticed yesterday that when I receive a text message siri will read it aloud, but if it's an imessage siri won't read it. Is there some setting that needs to be adjusted?

I have the same problem. Seems to be that Siri will read the first message, or indeed perform the first action with audio feedback, but then after that it is silent. It does appear that it is listening as if i ask Siri to play music, I get the listening icon and then the music plays. Similarly if i ask it to send a text that will work (although I will not receive any audio feedback confirming this).

i have a 2016 Peugeot 208. Have tried rebooting phones multiple times, and removing and re-adding vehicle. Running latest version of iOS 11.1.1

Hello jojotarantino,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with Siri and CarPlay. I would like to test this in a few different ways, and without the connection to the car to isolate the issue.

With CarPlay, you can activate Siri a few ways such as "Hey Siri", using the Home Button on the car, or on the CarPlay screen. Do you experience the same issue in all the different ways you activate Siri? Also, is Siri able to read the message when you tap on it? On the CarPlay screen, tap the message. It will not show the message, Siri is supposed to read it to you.

This next step will help us isolate the issue from the iPhone and CarPlay. Try and see if Siri is able to read the messages, both SMS and iMessages, to you when you are disconnected from CarPlay.

You may also want to try the steps provided in these two articles. There are different options and troubleshooting based on how you are connecting to your car.

1. Set up CarPlay with your iPhone

2. Get help connecting your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with your car stereo

If you need more help, please let us know the answers to the questions above, and if you have gone through both articles in their entirety, including updating the car stereo firmware. Thanks and have a great evening.

Me too - no apparent rhyme or reason to when it reads it or when it doesn't - but when it doesn't read it, you can tell it thinks it did, because there is a pause while it should be reading, and then the "reply" option and "read again" options appear on the screen (but read again doesn't work either).

I wonder if the problem is vehicle specific, I have a 2017 Kia Sedona.

I may have found the solution.

it has worked the last couple of times, not sure if coincidence or not.

I only seem to get the voice reading my texts if I connect the iPhone to the USB before I start the car.

If I start the car first and then hook up the iPhone I do not get the voice reding texts.

All other functions, including hands free calling and playing music from Spotify seem to work either way.

will try over the next few days and see if this solves the issue
