Message App Won't Open

Hello,

I just updated to Sierra on my Macbook Pro and now the messages app won't open. It just bounces for a few minutes and then when it stops bouncing it isn't opened. When I go to force quit the application it says application not responding. I did not have a problem until I updated my operating system. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?

Thank you

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.4)

Hi,

Does the app launch properly when you start it the Applications Folder ?

If this is the case then the app may not be connected properly with the icon on the DOCK.

Click and Drag the icon off the DOCK

Click and drag the app to the DOCK - this does not really put the app on the DOCK but the OS recreates the Icon and the links to the app.

Have you tried Restart the computer ?

If that does not work try a NRAM reset How to reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Might be a corrupt .plist.

Do a backup, preferably 2 backups on 2 separate drives.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

If that doesn’t work, repeat the above but delete the com.apple.imagent.plist.
