Choppy incoming calls - corrects when I call back

I have an iPhone 7 Plus - Model MN522LL/A - 128 GB on the AT&T network.

For the past few months with increasing frequency I'm getting calls that are choppy - with a very rapid stutter. My callers tell me that I sound distorted on the other end as well.

This happens when I'm at 1-3 bars of signal strength - so it's not just when it's the lowest.

Is there any logic to why this is happening or ways to diagnose the cause so that I can correct?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hi

Follow the instructions here as appropriate, including contacting Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), making another Genius Bar reservation or visiting an Apple Authorised Service Provider if necessary:

If you are currently using Voice over LTE (VoLTE), then turning it off may help to improve the sound quality during calls:

  • Go to: Settings > Mobile / Cellular > Mobile / Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE.
  • If Voice & Data is currently selected, tap to select Data Only instead.

If call quality improves as a result of making the change, contact your carrier for assistance with the issue.
