I'm a teacher and would like to use Bluetooth on my Apple TV and iPad. I use Keynote for my lectures, but they have embedded videos in them. While I'm using the Bluetooth (can't get on our network with Apple TV) the videos are choppy. Is there any way to have smoother videos using this method? Is it the Bluetooth that is the barrier? That is interesting they feel that way. I know several of the local high school teachers use them, and some people use them at the community college I work at, and both places recognize them as a tool for teaching. The college IT department actually stocks many of the cables to connect the iOS devices to projectors and other gear at the college. Makes things a lot easier. Good luck with your work.
Exactly...they consider it a "consumer" device and won't allow Apple TVs on the network.
Hi DrMarsha. It sounds like you're actually using peer-to-peer AirPlay. You enable Bluetooth on the iPad and Apple TV appears in the list of AirPlay devices. When you select it, a direct point-to-point WiFi connection is made, outside the network, and data is transferred over this link, not actually over Bluetooth. If you're using mirroring, the limitation may be the performance of your iPad. Which iPad model is it?
It is the iPad Pro...large. I have Bluetooth enabled on both of them. Should I be doing anything different to use the Bluetooth connection versus the peer-to-peer? Not exactly sure of the difference...
Hi DrMarsha. You are using peer-to-peer AirPlay. You are not transferring video over Bluetooth. Your iPad should be up to the task of AirPlaying video. Is the video stored on the iPad or is it streaming from another server?
Hmm. Hard to say. I assume the video plays smoothly when the iPad is not mirroring. I wonder if it has something to do with the video being embedded in the Keynote. How does it work if you play the video outside of Keynote? Do you create these presentations on the iPad, not on a computer? Also, how does it work with the Apple TV outside the school environment (say at home), where there's less WiFi traffic?
I'll take a look and let you know. Also, do you know if there is a way to set up the Apple TV (in the initial setup) without an Internet connection? Multiple people are going to be using this and I'm not comfortable with entering my university credentials and having those stored on the Apple TV...
You could create a new email and Apple ID just for the device. Then logout of all accounts and forget the WiFi after setting it up. Also, if it will only be used for AirPlay, you can lock it in Conference Room Mode, but I'm not sure how to do this.
I'm guessing it is the speed and ability of Bluetooth to handle this. Can you not get on the network because the school won't allow it? Do they understand what it is that you are trying to do?
It is stored on the iPad in Keynote. I also tried YouTube streaming (with the iPad connected to the network) and again, it plays, just very choppy.
