Safe Pdf Reader?

I have been using Skim. It has started to strobe. I am photosensitive. It is not safe. I can't report the bug because I don't have a Sourceforge account. I had used Preview. If I slipped while scrolling, it would reformat the pdf and would sometimes remove the text layer.

(I use Scroll+ for scrolling, because I can't use scrollwheels, can't use touch devices, and have trouble using the ridiculously narrow scrollbars.)

Can anyone recommend a safe pdf reader?

I would prefer one which keeps its own bookmark list, and which doesn't copy pdfs to its own extra extra library.

I have used Skim for many years and I find no problem with it. Maybe you need to update it? Can you describe the circumstances in which you have it strobing? Are you perhaps using it in presentation mode in Sierra? There is indeed a redrawing issue that affects all programs that use PDFKit - Preview, Skim, TeXShop, to name the ones I use daily. If that is your problem then Adobe Reader may be your only option because it does not use PDFKit.

I was trying to crop a scanned page when the whole window started strobing.

I had used Preview. If I slipped while scrolling, it would reformat the pdf and would sometimes remove the text layer. I have coordination issues and use a special mouse, keymapping, and Scroll+. Preview often takes attempts to scroll as attempts to select part of the page and do *something*.

I can't download Adobe reader. I am photosensitive. Adobe's site sometimes strobes.

I often need to repair pdf files to make them compatible with Skim, Preview, and my old Kindle, and to compress them, but I don't want to add to them. Most "pdf editing" tools seem to be aimed at adding to them. I would like to convert most to epub and mobi, but haven't found adequate tools.

Skim is like that, and that is the main reason I stopped using it long ago for PDFs. The new Adobe Reader is a good tool but difficult to use. PDF Pen Pro is one of the best tools I have used for manipulating PDF files. Furthermore, it has its own built-in OCR to scan PDFs into editable text files. It has many many good features making it worth the hefty over $100 price tag. Converting files to ePub or mobi may better be done with the freeware, Calibre.
