how to show from field when composing?

When composing a new email using mail. The 'from' field is not displayed , I like to know which email address it will appear my email is coming from. How do I get this field to show up?

Mac Mini Server (Late 2012), macOS Sierra (10.12.4)

If you open mail app and compose a new mail ( command + N ) and minimize the background mail application and simultaneously open system preferences and click on internet accounts , select the webmail account and uncheck the box of mail , the from field will disappear in compose mail window .

User uploaded file

To show the From field check the box of mail and you can click on drop down arrows in front of From and select the desired webmail or iCloud mail or if there are more mail accounts .

Hello NeilsBohr,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you want to be able to see the From field when composing messages in the Mail app. To do this, you have to have multiple accounts or aliases enabled, as this describes:

If you set up email aliases or use several email accounts, you can choose which address to use when you send your messages. You can also specify an address where you want to receive replies to a message.

  • Choose an address for the current message: Move the pointer over the From field in your message, click the pop-up menu that appears, then choose an email address.

  • Use the same address for all messages: Choose Mail > Preferences, click Composing, click the “Send new messages from” pop-up menu, then choose your email account or have Mail automatically select the best address, based on the email address of the first recipient in your message, as well as the currently selected mailbox and message.

  • Set a Reply To address for the current message: Click the Header Fields button User uploaded file in the toolbar of the message window, choose Reply-To Address Field, then enter the address where you want to receive replies to your message.

If you use multiple email accounts, Mail can help ensure that you use the intended From address when you send a message, based on the email address of your first recipient in the To field. For example, if your preferred email address (in Composing preferences) is your personal Gmail address but you’re writing an email to your professor at their school address (.edu), Mail uses your school address instead of your personal address in the From field.
