Safari: no connection to the internet

using an iPhone 5C, Safari can't open any page at all even after repeated tries. It says I'm not connected to the internet. I've tried closing and opening, turning phone off and on, turning wifi on/off, trying with cellular data, but nothing seems to work. Everything else works, like chrome which connects witho problems, email and all other apps work. Please help

Hello Michèle France,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are unable to use Safari on your iPhone to connect to the internet, even though other apps are not having this same issue. First, try clearing the info in Safari with these steps:

  • To clear your history and cookies, tap Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Clearing your history, cookies, and browsing data from Safari won't change your AutoFill information.
  • To remove other stored information, tap Settings > Safari > Advanced > Website Data > Remove All Website Data.

Clear the history and cookies from Safari on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Then force close the Safari app and restart your iPhone as the shut down and start up process is important to keep the iOS software running properly. iOS clears cached data and does other system optimizations when you turn your device off and on.

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Cheers!

Thanks for replying, Michèle France, and that additional info, it really helps! At this point, we would like you to reinstall iOS on your device; this will help us isolate the situation further. Reinstalling iOS should not affect any of your data, but it is always a best practice to make sure you have a current backup in either iTunes or iCloud.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
Import photos and videos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Once you have a current backup, follow the steps from the "If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up" section in this article:

If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch won't turn on

Use the “Update” option and not “Restore” and these steps will reinstall iOS. Keep in mind that these steps were written for a different issue, but they will still help us isolate the situation further. Have a great day and thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!
