bluetooth connection to iphone not working

My iPhone 6 (10.3.1) won't connect to my MacBook Pro (10.11.6) - message from Mac is 'Network is unavailable' and from iPhone 'Connection Unsuccessful'. I manage to connect my iPad without problems, and iPhone is even nearer to MacBook, it managed to pair it again after i deleted all my bluetooth devices on my Mac but no connection is established. When i try from my iPhone, the phone appears twice in the Bluetooth list of the Bluetooth icon in the menu bar - the one says connected, the other not, then the connected one disappears shortly after. I can link my iPhone via bluetooth to my speakers and it works fine, just not to the MacBook nor my IPad. However, AirDrop works but i would like to use internet sharing using Bluetooth. Any suggestions appreciated.

After contacting Apple support, I upgraded my MacBook's software to latest Sierra. I can now connect my iPhone to the MacBook's network and use the internet. Bluetooth connection to the iPhone is apparently not intended (or native) - just very confusing that it allows to pair it but not connect it. Also bluetooth file-sharing doesn't work for same reasons but Airdrop does. Ipad connects fine via Bluetooth - so now it is more complicated for iphone....
