Kernel task 100% cpu

Performance of my MacBook pro dropped drastically since last boot, to the level even mouse movement is not smooth anymore. The system was in sleep mode and drained the battery completely. Upon restart it was sluggish and battery does not recharge (MagSafe indicator remaining green). The process kernel task takes between 500 and 700% cpu and 750mb ram, making the machine useless. No programs active apart from activity monitor, no external hardware attached. The system does not heat up, fans are not spinning.

After reading some blogs i tried several things, without any result. In safe mode cpu usage remains low, but the system remains slow as well. Normal reboot brings back the problem. Resetting SMC and PRAM does not solve the issue.

Any idea what could be causing this and how to fix?

EtreCheck is a tool to help people on Apple Support Communities remotely debug problems with people’s computers. That can be a difficult task even when the machine is in front of you. Attempting it over an internet discussion forum is extremely difficult.

Uninstalled Creative Cloud. Disk utility First Aid did not report any errors (exit code 0, volume appears to be OK). Took ages to boot into Recovery and run. Nothing changed. Performance even worse (i have to type very slowly for not to loose any keystrokes). Kernel task at >700% CPU. Battery still doesn't charge at all (at 0%). MagSafe green light is on. It is for many hours continuously on 100% CPU now. Still, the machine remains cool and silent (no fans). Very strange, should be almost melting down.

Hello Dbpieter,

This heavy kernel_task usage is failsafe cooling strategy for the operating system. If the operating system thinks the machine is running too hot, it will fake a super-heavy kernel_task usage to slow down all of the other processes.

Your problem is almost certainly related to the battery. The low-level diagnostics that EtreCheck runs are reporting that your battery should be replaced. And yet you have only 79 cycles. And yet this is a 2011 machine. None of that adds up. I suggest you turn off your machine and take it to an Authorized Apple Service Centre as soon as possible.

Battery: Health = Replace Now - Cycle count = 79

etresoft,

Would it be possible for "Replce Now" to be output in "Red" ? Assuming the confidence level of this bit of information is high enough.

I blew right past that. I confess that there are a lot of things in an EtreCheck report that I do not read in detail. I look for specific personal hot buttons, and only occasionally go over the entire report line-by-line.

Hopefully you didn't read that here. We have come a long way from the days of hand-held devices powered by two AA batteries. If there is a problem in the power circuitry of anything smartphone-sized or bigger, an explosion or fire could result. Don't take chances when it comes to power. Or if you do, make sure you have good fire and life insurance.

But you say you do not have a battery problem, and the original post was using a 3rd party battery, and when they replaced the battery their problem went away.

So are you using a 3rd party battery?

If not, then you have a totally different problem, and should start a new post, as suggested by Csound1
