Macintosh HD deleted - blinking folder with question mark

Hi,

The question mark means your Mac cannot find a viable OS to start from.

It sounds like your disk has completely died if you can't see it in DU in Recovery Mode. Time to install a new HD and OS from Recovery or Internet Recovery.

You need a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition to install the OS onto.

If you don't have one you will need use the Partition tab to create one.

• Boot to Recovery & open Disk Utility
• Select the disk in the sidebar (select the upper item, as that is the entire disk).
• Select the Partition tab
• Examine that view & try adding a new partition via the Plus at the lower left of the view.

  If you can't add a partition it may be because you have used all the disk space & already have a partition. In that case swap to the erase tab & erase the large partition to use Mac OS Extended (journaled) as the format.

• Apply any changes
• Quit Disk Utility & return to the install OS X option.
• See if it now appears in the install options. If it doesn't show up quit the installer (cmd+q) and try Disk Utility again.

If that does not work post back with info, if you have access to second Mac it may help if you can download a Mavericks installer from the store to make a USB installer. Sometimes using an external disk to reformat helps because recovery is running from the internal disk. Internet recovery mode can also be used for that… (hold cmd+alt+R at startup)
