Home Screen Freezes When I Swipe Down for Spotlight

When I swipe down on my home screen to get to spotlight search, the home screen animates briefly as it would to reveal the spotlight search bar but then freezes. The screen doesn't respond to touch and the only way to unfreeze the phone is to press the home button. When I press the home button the home screen animates briefly again and then becomes responsive again. The only way for me to use spotlight search is to swipe left to the lock screen widgets and search there.

I have this issue on my iPhone 7+ with iOS 10.3.1.

I've searched google for answers but only found one reference to this issue with no resolution.

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.3.1

Try restarting your iPhone by holding down the power button and swiping to off when the slider appears. If that does not work move on to a Forced Restart: hold down the home and down volume button wait for the Apple logo, let go of the buttons. Try this step after attempting to do a spotlight search and the phone freezes.

At least in iOS 10.3.x, it seems that some Accessibility-features mess-up the behavior of Spotlight search.

To solve, try switching-off Accessibility-features that relate to text-size:

  • Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom: Off
  • Settings > General > Accessibility > Magnifier: Off
  • Settings > General > Accessibility > Large Text: Off

I have the same issue with my 6+ on 10.3.2. Pulling down for quick spotlight search results in a little screen bounce and effectively replaces home screen with a screenshot. The whole home screen is unresponsive. I can workaround it by hitting the home button. If I reboot my phone the pull down for spotlight search works again for a day or so.

Not sure what the issue is or how to troubleshoot it further. This is an issue that persisted through the most recent is update.

Hi Everyone;

Yes these ‘bugs’ are way too frequent and yes no solution seems to work and yes we all still miss Jobs.

One positive is that still, after all is said and done, Apple OS is still uncomplicated and still ‘fixable.’

So what do we mac lovers do;? Still waters run deep so remember the simpler the better.

A re-install, suggested here, should not be a ‘go to;’ that may be the simple answer from a support rep, who doesn’t want to bother, but not for the user.. First try a simple re-boot (holding down the home button & power button simultaneously until the white Apple logo appears). The re-boot has been a surefire fix since ‘back in the d

ay’ and it silenced those Microsoft PC’ers who thrived on over-complication & re-installs.

If problems abound it actually can be simpler to pop to the shop, the right shop.

Forget the Apple Boutique (oops! I mean Apple Store) which plays foot loose & fancy free with the word ‘genius.’ Those stores are great for a good browse but what an agenda! The over-kill politeness of the clipboarded workers barely mask their determination to get customers in line as you bounce from one clipboard to the next, only to eventually wait an hour to chat with a ‘genius’ that favors backing up before you re-install (they sell many a product to attach said back-up).

The simplest solution, SIMPLY MAC. These authorized stores prove just how fuxable Apple OS remains.

NOTE: if you need some serious help run don’t walk ASAP. Apple is busy tearing up the contract deal that put the big ‘A’ in authorized.

Apple is having none of that 1,2,3 in & out quick fix that leaves no room for pushing gaget after gaget after costly gaget our way. That is fine, gagets are fun but simple solutions are even finer.

SHARE was one of the best & coolest ways Apple was innovative... it was cool & friendly & free... you know, like the internet was meant to be.

Still, Apple comes with an easy fix and no one seems to enjoy going to a shop just to make your costly investment function, unless of course there are gadgets to browse.

Just in case, get to know your settings, the logo that looks like a gear wheel. Sometimes the simplest solutions are simply setvthere, free and clear (for now).
