Numbering pages in word for iMac

Help!!! I am trying to page number a submission to a literary agent in one online Word document to attach to an email ( as per their submissions guidelines). I want to have my synopsis ( 2 pages) then the beginning of my novel ( the front page and a quotes page) and then the novel starts at Chapter 1 ( 50 pages) - effectively page 5 of the whole document. I only want the novel to be page numbered as the agent wants the first 50 pages of the novel, and I want that to be clear. I have followed the Help instructions and have inserted section breaks after each of the first 2 sections, so the novel then becomes Section 3. When I follow the instructions for inserting page numbers for Section 3 - it works - page 1 is page 1, but then the first 2 sections are also numbered as well!! I don't want this and can't seem to work out how to start my numbering at what will effectively be page 5 of the whole document. Anyone got any useful tips to overcome this? I have Word for Mac 2011 version 14.7.2. Many thanks in advance Rarmy.

Hi rarmy,

In Pages, you would use the Section inspector to set section 3 Headers and Footers to NOT match previous section by unchecking the checkbox indicated by the right arrow. Then click the radio button indicated by the green arrow and type 1 or use the stepper controls to tell Pages that this is to be Page 1 of this section.

If you have not already done Insert > Page Number, do so in the Header or Footer box on this page.

If you did Insert > Page Number earlier, the number 1 should be in the header or footer as soon as you finish the setting above.

Chect the first four pages, and delete any page number that appears in the header or footer there.

The process in Word should be similar, but will probably differ in details.

If you can't find that process, repost your question in the MS Office forums linked in Viking's message above.

HI rarmy,

As I thought—pretty much the same process in Word as in Pages.

Matthew Rathbone wrote (and illustrated) a short set of instructions and posted them in his blog shortly after MS Office Mac 2011 was released. You'll find them here.

Regards,

Barry

PS: my search using 'word for mac 2011 page numbers' (without the quotes) on DuckDuckGo yielded the linked result, plus several links to youtube videos on this topic.

Word is an application that resides on Windows, Mac, iPad, and Cloud. The Word document itself is platform agnostic, unless someone uses features and fonts in the Windows Word version that are not supported in the Mac version. There are features in Word 2016 for Windows that are not found in Word 2016 for Mac, or your Office 2011 for Mac Word 14.7.2 release.

Thank you for replying. I am using word for mac 2011 latest updated version, not pages, on my desktop mac. I just cant get it not to apply page numbers to all separated sections of the document. If I deleted those in the earlier sections I don't want numbered, then the whole lot goes down, including the section of the document I do want page numbered. I have also contacted Word communities but no luck there either. I wondered if I had a setting on somewhere that affected these things ( as Im not a computer literate person) but if I have I haven't a clue what or where! Its very frustrating! But thanks anyway.

Thanks for getting back to me again Barry. Sadly I have done that Rathbone instruction - and it doesn't work- well not on my Mac at least - that is why Im getting so frustrated!!! I followed the instructions exactly to create three sections with the appropriate section breaks in the correct places. As soon as I applied page numbers ( as instructed) to Section 3, numbers also came up on sections 1 and 2 as well. When I tried to delete them on Sections 1 and 2, the numbers also went from Section 3!!! I tried a few times to make sure I had followed the instructions, but no go. When I have some spare time I'll go and look on the youtube videos and that DuckDuckGo. Thanks so much for your assistance though!

HI Barry - Just to let you know - a result!! Went on DuckDuck and watched a video - which showed me how to untick a link ( to previous) which must have been ticked previously and I hadn't realised quite what it meant. I knew Id missed a tick box somewhere. This is what happens when you havent got a clue about computers and software. So, thank you very much!! Job done!
