AFAIK you can use one AirPod but only if you have the 2nd one to make the initial connection, then remove it after.

you can try to charge one and see if it works on its own
the charge times for each pod would need to be independent of each other so you should be able to charge one when the other stops but I have no idea if both ear buds need to be docked in order to facilitate a charge of one or the other or both.

You can charge them singly or together.
I doubt that you can pair just one airpod. You can use one and leave the other in the case, but I think they would both be paired.
