insert mathematical symbol

I am typing a long document in which I need to frequently use the "prime" symbol. NOT a single quote or apostrophe, but an actual mathematical prime. I understand how to do "insert symbol" in MS Word and navigate to the symbol I want, but if I am having to type this character every few sentences or words (I'm talking about the 3 prime and 5 prime ends of DNA), I don't want to have to do insert symbol every time. Because that slows down my 100+ wpm typing to like 5 or 10 wpm and is a big waste of time (time that I am billing to a client, so I am trying to be conscious of it). Is there any way I can do this quickly? Like without using my trackpad at all, just keyboard shortcuts? I'm using Mac OS Sierra. I know two different ways to do this in Windows but not a single one for Mac (unless I copy-paste a prime symbol, which will work until I forget and copy something else...).

From your Dock, select the System Preferences icon. Once you have this panel up, click on the Keyboard preference pane, and then on the Text tab.

Next, from your edit menu, choose Emoji & Symbols. This will launch a character palette. In its search window, just type the word prime. This will show single, double, triple, and quadruple prime marks. In the Text : Replace column, I would enter p1 for single prime, and then tab over to the With column. There, I would double-click on the single prime character symbol on the character palette, and it will be inserted into the With field. Press return.

Repeat that for p2, p3, p4, and p5 primes respectively. If you have an Edit menu : Substitutions entry, ensure that its sub-menu has Text Replacement checked. With this set, whenever you type one of these prime shortcuts, a floating replacement panel will appear, you press the spacebar, and continue to type.
