"Share My Location Unavailable. Unable to connect to server. Please try again later."

After the most recent update, my son had problems signing into his iCloud account and verifying his identity. Plus, I could no longer see his location in iMessage or Find My Friends. We finally got signed in (had to update password, update security ?s and turn off two-step id). Everything seems to be ok now, except the share location is still not working. All the setting are correct in location services and in share my location. When we try to change the settings on his phone we get this message.... "Share My Location Unavailable. Unable to connect to server. Please try again later." Please help us fix this issue.

I just found that with the new iOS update 11 there is a settings option in the cellular data tab. If this is turned off, locations will not share.

Go to Settings-> Cellular-> Settings and make sure this is clicked on.

Hello krshepherd2,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I'm understanding correctly, you are having trouble locating your son's iPhone with Find my Friends. I know how important it is to stay connected to family and I will be happy to help.

Please check the steps below to see if it helps, from the article: Get help using Find My Friends

If you see a No location available label for friends

You might not see your friend's location for these reasons:

  • Your friend might need to correct the date on their device. Tap Settings > General > Date & Time.
  • The device is off or isn't connected to cellular or Wi-Fi.
  • Your friend turned on Hide My Location in Find My Friends.
  • Your friend turned off Location Services in Settings > Privacy > Location Services or in Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Find Friends.
  • Your friend isn't signed in to Find My Friends on the device being located.
  • The device is in a country or region where Apple doesn't offer this feature. This feature might not be available in all countries or regions due to technical limitations or local law.

A device's previous location is available for two hours. After two hours, you see Location not available.

Cheers.

Perfect - I don't use this feature, but on my new phone (restored from old phone backup), it was ticked on (green), but throwing this same error (and could not disable it). Once I enabled Find Friends under cellular, then share my location no longer appeared as if enabled. When I went back and disabled Find Friends under cellular again, Share My Location stayed off under iCloud too, just how I like it (feet on the ground and data local - cloud schmoud)!
