External Hard Drives

I have two Western Digital External Hard Drives wired to my iMac 27". I am getting an error message that the Hard Drive was disconnected improperly or words to that effect. I've tried using the Disk Utility to verify the disk and its permissions, although it's now called "First Aid." No data is lost and they float in and out of my display at random.
