Why is one user account is very slow on my iMac.

My administrative account on my iMac has become very very slow. It does not matter what operation I try, they are all very slow. I've restarted the Mac and logged in under different user accounts on the Mac and those profiles are fine. I've been able to start in safe mode, remove the apps that automatically load at startup, then restarted, and it's still very slow. It takes several minutes to do any command. For instance, if I click on the apple to open the menu, I get the pinwheel for about 3-4 minutes and then the menu opens.

Any idea what is going on here or how to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Ok. So I have been able to get things moving on a new admin account. Things on this one are running just fine. I have run this before and there were 3 errors with the HD, but now there does not seem to be any. Things are smooth on this account. What might be slowing things on the other one?

Generally speaking if you're already testing or seeing different performance in other user accounts then you're already 90% of the way there.

You're on the right track with startup items and similar processes causing slowness.

All of what we're going to be able to give you at this point is speculation, however if it were me I'd simply make one more account, backup and restore my personal data to that new account and either delete or keep that original Admin account for safe-keeping (as long as you have the disk space for it anyway).

I do know many people don't prefer the nuke-and-pave methods but often they'll save you time and effort in the long run.

On the topic of optimization have you tried using Onyx or other System tools to purge/clean out cache files and the like? could be some corruption in a User level cache and it could account for the reported symptoms.

Let us know what you find out.

That's nice to here, thanks.πŸ™‚

We'll have to see a report with the new drive to tell what is what.

Your Mc can handle the largest drives made as of now, 10 TB!...

https://eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/imac-27-inch-late-2009-3.06-ghz/internal-dri ves

I'd stay way from 1.5 TB & 3 TB drives because of failure rates.

I'd go with this unless you can afford SSDs, 5 year warranty...
