Safari 10.1 font loading document.fonts.ready promise fires too soon

In Safari 10.1, it looks like the document.fonts.ready promise is being resolved when document.fonts.status is still "loading". Is this correct? I'm seeing correct behavior in Chrome where the status is "loading" until the ready promise is fulfilled, then the status is "loaded". Can someone help me understand this, or is this a Safari 10 bug?
