Blank Circles with no initials on my message screen

When I go to my message screen (Iphone 6) I see my message, along with a circle with the "message sender's initials. However, when I scroll down, I see "blank circles" with no initials and no message. What are these blank circles?

When you scroll down the contact's photo is shrunk in size to make more space for messages displayed on screen.

If you don't have a photo for that contact in your contacts, then the circle with initials is still shrunk down in size, but then there is no room for letters inside.

Do these messages have content inside? Or are they blank?

Are you able to delete these messages?

Perhaps a reboot would help?

On an iPhone 6s and earlier, iPad, or iPod touch: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
