Blocked Plug in

I am using Safari on an iMac. Several different sites have had click throughs to material I wanted to see and I get a black screen that says blocked plug in. I have turned ON every plugin I have for these sites. Still not working.

How do I find the problem? I have tried clicking on the error and it goes nowhere.

Interestingly, I had no issue getting to the website from the link you provided using Google Chrome on my Mac mini just now. However, like you, I was not able to successfully access it with Safari ... so, it looks like you are not the only one having this issue.

I don't currently have any other browsers installed to test with. Also, I made sure that I did not have any plug-ins or extension enabled on my Safari browser when I attempted to connect to the site. What I got was the following error:

Thank you for the suggestion. Etrecheck found a couple of other problems but not that solved the blocked plug in issue. After your question about firewalls, I checked my Mac and realized I did not have it on, so I turned it on now. I do have an adblocker on (for many years).

I have had no new hardware or software for some time, and the problem just started yesterday with this and one other click through button on another email. This blocked item is a pdf, and the other I don't know but probably is a pdf file and is coming from http://s3.amazonaws.com

New research says I can right click on these buttons and open them in a new tab. That works. But not how it is supposed to work. No other sites or buttons have required this.

Here are the results from Etrecheck. Would appreciate any further insights, thank you.

Ok, thanks for providing the EtreCheck results. I don't see anything outstanding that would be the cause of this issue, however, I would offer the following suggestions for you to consider for next steps:

  1. Use another browser, like Google Chrome or any other of your choosing. Does the problem still exist? If not, then you narrowed it down to Safari.
  2. Disable or remove all Safari plugins and extensions. Does this resolve the issue? If so, add back one extension/plugin at-a-time until it reappears. When it does you found the potential culprit.
  3. You have a lot of Internet Plug-ins. Do you really need all of them? Consider removing those you don't or rarely use.

How do I know which Internet Plugins I don't or rarely use? They seem to be in the background for me as I never actually invoke them myself.

No doubt they have been installed (some in the background) when you needed to access certain websites or to allow some additional features in your Safari browser.

May I suggest that you delete any Java, FlashPlayer or Silverlight plugins as these can be both problematic and potentially a security risk.

To access Safari Extensions, run Safari and from the Safari menu, select Safari > Preferences > Extensions. By default, there shouldn't be any extensions installed.

To access Safari Plug-ins, run Safari and from the Safari menu, select Safari > Preferences > Security > Plug-in Settings...

I would suggest that you download and run EtreCheck, and then, post the results so that we can get a better idea on what Safari plugins are running on your iMac to offer any potential solutions.

In addition do you have the software firewall enabled on your iMac? ... or use any third-party software firewalls or anti-virus/malware applications?

Finally, were you able to get to these sites before without any issues? If so, what hardware/software changes have your made to your Mac when you started to have this problem?

May 2, 2017 11:45 AM in response to Tesserax

Hi, yes I should have mentioned that these buttons work properly in Firefox. So it's a Safari problem.

How do I know which Internet Plugins I don't or rarely use? They seem to be in the background for me as I never actually invoke them myself.

I will be brave and remove all of the Satari plugins and extensions. And then do the add back process.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hey,

Open Finder, in your top Menu bar, click "Go" and choose "Computer". Choose Macintosh HD, and then Library (/Library). Find the folder that says "Internet Plug-Ins". There is a folder titled "Disabled Plug-Ins, see if the desired Plug-In is in that folder, if it is, simply drag it out and put it in "Internet Plug-Ins". You may be asked for your Admin password to move the file. Once it's done, restart the computer and test the issue. It will likely be resolved, if not - let me know and I can provide you more steps 🙂

May 2, 2017 3:47 PM in response to Tesserax

Thank you. I deleted those plugins and restarted. Still have the problem. I only have one extension which is the Ad Blocker I mentioned before and I've been using it for years. I disabled it for my mail and still have the problem.

The only plugins I have left are

Citrix online Web Deployment

Adobe Reader

IphotoPhotcast

Picasa

Should I delete those too, then?

Thanks for your patience with this.

Yes, that's where I started this thread. I had made sure that box was checked and then turned ON all the plugins in hope that whatever was blocking me would operate. Now I have most of them deleted and still no luck.

Probably will delete the rest and see. A little further research turned up an alternative route to open the content. Instead of clicking on the button and having it open directly, I can right click it and click open in a new tab - that works! But its cumbersome and not the way it should be done.

Thanks for your input.

Sorry, that this is still not working for you. I can imagine how frustrating this is becoming. Thanks for hanging in there.

You mentioned that this only occurs for only a few sites. Would these be financial site, per chance? Like banking, credit card, or investment-type sites that require a secure connection? That is one the relies on an SSL connection where the URL would start with "https?"

May 4, 2017 1:22 PM in response to Tesserax

Hi, I thought about that but the two sites are not secured. One is a calendar of events for a club and the other is a checklist of activities for clients of SurveyMonkey.

I don't think they'd mind if I gave you the URL https://www.surveymonkey.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Survey-Confidence-Checkl ist.pdf?utm_source=email&utm_medium=sm_c… This is the link to one that continues to have plugin blocked message. I called them and they say they haven't had reports of problems from others. Although I did offer a suggestion that they are going to pursue to at least offer these links on their site instead of a separate blog or email only. So that's a benefit that's come out of this.

You are very sweet to continue to think of solutions. Because I am out of what to do next 🙂

Thank you,

Cindy

I am having the same problem. The only plugins I have are Evernote web clipper and Site Adviser. I have my preferences set to allow plug ins for Adobe flash player, Dymo label and McAfee site adviser. I don't consider these a lot and they were all installed by me deliberately.

I would like to continue to use Safari but I find this inability to read certain pdfs a significant impediment.
