iOS Files taking up too much space on Mac

Hi everyone!

So I have this problem of too little storage on my Mac. I have a MacBook Air 128GB and I see that iOS files (as in iPhone back up) is taking up 62GB of my storage?! I don't know what to do, as I obviously have to back up my iPhone. I was thinking of two things, but don't know if it is possible...

1) Can I back up my iPhone 6 Plus to an external hard drive and not to my Mac, in order to free up space on my Mac? If yes, then how do I do that?

2) Would it be better to back up my whole iPhone to iCloud? And is it even possible?

Someone please help me!! It will be greatly appreciated!

iPhone Backup file locations are stored in ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

I highly recommend you backup your iPhone to iCloud: Settings → Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes & App Store (iCloud if not on iOS 10.3) → icloud → iCloud Backup → iCloud Backup = ON then tap Back Up Now

Once the backup is complete, delete the iPhone backups from your computer to free up space: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

Can also be found in /Users/myusername/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
