iPad mini won't update because it says I'm not connected to the internet - I am!

My iPad mini, admittedly an old device at this point, needs to be updated to iOS 9.2.1 so that I can download some newer apps. When I try to update the operating system, though, it tells me it "failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet."

I am connected, though. I am typing this from my iPad right now! Email works! Safari works!

Why won't it update?

Yep,

Diana.McCall is correct!

iOS 9.2.1 is no longer available for an iOS update.

The current and last update for your 1st generation iPad Mini is iOS 9.3.5.

Either re initiate software update in the iOS Settings app OR connect your iPad Mini to a computer running the latest version of iTunes and backup and update your iPad Mini from your computer through iTunes.

Good Luck!

Hi wirth26. Please post a new question describing your problem. Give as much detail as you can: device model, iOS version, what you are doing, what happens when you try, any error messages, things you've already tried, etc. Just go to the Using iPad list page using the link at the top of this page, and use the "ask a question" slot at the top. Lots of people follow this site, and someone should be able to help.

Hi Diana, I didn't know if you could help me as well. I'm having the same issues as others by my phone saying I can't update because I'm not connected to the Internet, when I am. I have an iPhone 5s, and I only have the option to download the iOS 10.2.1, I don't have any other systems of choice to download. I needed to update because I just bought an Apple Watch and I can't even use it until I update my phone. Thank you!

OK. The problem is that you've downloaded an outdated iOS update which cannot be verified by Apple. Note that the message begins with "Verification failed" before suggesting that you're not connected. You need to delete the old update. Go to Settings > General > Storage and iCloud Usage. Tap the first Manage Storage, the one for STORAGE. Wait for the list to populate, find the download (gear icon), tap it and select Delete. Then try again to update, from Settings > General > Software Update. You should be offered the current iOS 10.3.3.

You are mistaken about your model ID number, but no matter.

The model ID starts with an MD, so you have a 1st gen iPad Mini.

A 1st gen iPad Mini cannot be upgraded past iOS 9.3.5.

The iPad 2, 3 and 1st generation iPad Mini are all ineligible and excluded from upgrading to iOS 10 OR iOS 11.

They all share similar hardware architectures and a less powerful 1.0 Ghz CPU that Apple has deemed insufficiently powerful enough to even run the basic, barebones features of iOS 10.

Why would you want to upgrade, anyways?

Since iOS 8, older iPad models such as the iPad 2, 3, 4 and the original iPad Mini have only been getting the most basic of iOS features.

Older iPad users get none of the newest and coolest cutting edge features that newer model iDevices, with better hardware specs, can handle with more aplomb.

FYI,

Just because your 1st gen iPad Mini is no longer able to upgrade to the latest iOS doesn't mean your 1st gen iPad Mini is suddenly useless.

So, your options are really keep using your 1st gen iPad Mini or purchase a new iPad if you feel you need or want to.

Your current 1st gen iPad Mini will still work and continue to receive app updates until sometime In the near future , when, with the recent introduction of iOS 11, ALL support for older 32 bit iDevices and any iOS 32 bit apps will come to a final end.

Your 1st gen iPad Mini will still work and function as it always has, but will no longer receive any more app updates after the Fall of 2017.

The 1st gen iPad Mini has had 4-5 years of iOS upgrades/updates

The final app updates your 1st gen iPad Mini will receive will be its last!

Currently, your iPad Mini is still continuing to receive app updates, but look for this to change sometime in the foreseeable future.

This is why Apple introduced the new, lower cost 2017 iPad 5 model, in April

Apple is trying to get older iPad 2, 3, 4 and 1st gen Mini iPad users to upgrade to more modern iPad hardware in anticipation of the release of iOS 11, which will render all older 32 bit iDevices obsolete.

Good Luck to You!

iPad mini won't update because it says I'm not connected to the internet - I am!
