My phone of 3 years is stating it wants to activate what does that mean and what do I do next?
nothing has happened and I can't get into my phone.
I put my passcode in and it just goes back to a screen that says
It may take a few minutes to activate your phone.
its been over 30 minutes now
what has happened?

Sorry, I have no answer. I just want to say that I experienced the same thing. My iPad Air asks me to activate (it's on activation lock screen) out of the blue. I'm not upgrading my iOS 9.3.5. I have no problem reactivating it.
what did you do to reactivate your phone and did you loose all your data?
Not a phone but an iPad. I entered my username and password and got it unlocked immediately. Nothing is lost. I'm seeing a few recent posts with a similar (activation lock) problem.
