I have fiber optic and there is no modem. How do you set up the time capsule securely with no modem?

Unfortunately, not much information here to go on.

We don't know who your provider might be....that would at least provide a few more clues.

There is normally a modem-like device called an ONT that is installed with most fibre networks. It is usually located near the point where the fibre cable enters your home. Do you have an ONT?

If you are not sure, you may need to ask your provider.

Did the fibre provider supply you with a wireless router? If yes, what make and model number is this device?

If not, have you contacted your provider to ask them what router they would recommend with their service?

The Time Capsule was originally designed to work with standard DSL and cable type service, so how well it might work with fibre.....if the Time Capsule must connect directly to the fibre connection.....is open to question.

The fiber optic cable comes into my house to a telephone box

And that "box" is no doubt an ONT, or it contains an ONT. There is one in every fibre network that I've ever seen.

Frankly, Linksys is a more versatile and compatible product for fibre type connections. Your best bet is to keep using the Linksys router, then connect the Time Capsule to the Linksys router using a wired Ethernet cable connection.

If you are willing to experiment, and have plenty of patience, we could try to get the Time Capsule working with it connected directly to the wall jack.....but there are no guarantees.

The first thing that we would need to know is what kind of connection protocols or credentials your provider might have as requirements in order to allow a router to connect. You may need to contact the support folks at your provider to get that information.

We still do not know who your provider might be. That information is important, because another user reading this post who might have the same provider as you may already know if it is possible to connect an Apple router directly to the fibre connection....or whether it's not possible......since the Time Capsule was originally designed to be used with DSL and cable service.

This type of information would no doubt save you a good deal of time and frustration.

I am using the time capsule currently and is working fine but when I do a scan of my network it shows all kinds of devices that are not on my LAN. I think it is all devices of other users in the neighborhood.

If you had told us this information up front, that would have saved you a good deal of time.

The Time Capsule is likely set up in what is known as "Bridge Mode". Although you can "see" other devices on the same service.....and they can "see" you as well.....other users will not be able to access your network unless they know the password for the Time Capsule and the passwords for your computers.

To see if the Time Capsule is set up in Bridge Mode.....Apple calls this "Off (Bridge Mode)" please do the following on your Mac:

Open AirPort Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the Time Capsule

Click Edit in the smaller window that appears

Click the Network tab at the top of the next window

Check the setting for Router Mode.

Is it "Off (Bridge Mode)"?
