tapback question

Received a text message to my iPhone from an android user about a week ago. Next to the message was a question mark inside a blue bubble. I didn't put it there, thought he had attached it. Yesterday the message he sent me was sent back to him as a text message...my picture was attached and the verbatim message he had sent me appeared to come from me as a new message. Can anyone explain why this happened? The re-sent message never appeared in line up as text message from me on my iPhone but clearly inserted in texts I actually sent him in his Samsung.

Very creepy. Is there a way to disable this feature? Thanks!

Thank you for your quick response. It is not a blue square but a blue bubble with a directional point on one end (like a comment from a cartoon character on the funny pages of a newspaper). That blue question mark containing bubble seems to be part of the package now available on iPhone referred to as "tap back" function. Would love to disable it since it has appeared on a message from an android user which means I probably made it happen from my iPhone after he sent message. It arbitrarily caused a weird re-send of information after a week's delay. I don't want something I don't understand or can't control on my phone and want to get rid of it.
