If I disconnect and reconnect it, it starts responding again. I can unplug it or I can use a switch on my usb hub. It's a minor nuisance. I use a vertical mouse to reduce rsi, with extra buttons, to scroll, so I'd rather not replace it every few years. Any idea what's going on?

That you are using OS Sierra has nothing to do with the mouse version. Your mouse is a either a USB, or it uses 2 AA batteries which you need to charge from time to time, or it is the MM2 version with a fixed rechargeable battery via a lightening cable direct to your computer. If you bought it in the last 12 months the chances are it is the latter one.

Which version of the Magic Mouse are you using, Marga? The older version should work fine but the new Magic Mouse 2 was designed for El Capitan and its successors.
No version. I can't use touch devices. And I am using Sierra.
