trouble input to garageband

I'm using garageband 10.0.3 with a Presonus 16.0.2 mixer and, most of the time, I can't get sound into the mixer and or garage band. I can't figure out what it is. I've done all the basic stuff, system prefs to make sure the input and output on the mac is using the mixer and I can always get it to play GB files but getting it to record has been often impossible. And when it does work I have no idea why because I'm not doing anything different. Any ideas? THx.
