Mac external extended wired keyboard making clicking sounds

Every few minutes my Mac external, extended, wired keyboard starts making constant clicking sounds (audible through computer audio), and won't stop until I hit the ESC key. I thought it was a stuck key, but it doesn't type any characters while it is clicking. Any idea what causes this and how to fix it?
