Trouble moving .DMG files to external HD

Hey again., I am having trouble moving Disk Image files to my external HD (FireLite 2.0 100gb USB powered). What I was trying to do was make copies of DVD's and burn them(I know), but Tiger will only make Disk Images for me(.dmg). Anyway, when I try moving the .dmg file to the external HD, I will get this error:
"Sorry, the operation could not be complete because an unexpected error occurred. (Error code –1309)."
It seems like it is transferring the file, but after about 5 mins. wait, that's all I get. I am trying to free up internal HD space, and any and all information that I can get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

If you want to make copies of DVDs it's rather easy:

Duplicate a CD or DVD

1. Insert the DVD/CD;
2. Open Disk Utility, and select the DVD/CD from the left side list (select the DVD/CD icon on top);
3. from the DU File menu select New | Disk Image from Disk 1;
4. Choose to format the disk image as DVD/CD Master, name the disk image and click Save;
5. When the .cdr file is finished select it with mouse and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info and check the box to lock the file;
6. Choose the .cdr file from the left side list, click Burn, and insert a new, blank DVD or CD.

^^Thanks for the info! On that note, How do I compress the file to burn onto DVD? Everytime i've tried that before, I keep getting an error message telling me that there is not enough space on the blank disk(and i've trited just about every type of disk.) I remember that Nero automatically compressed files prior to burning them, is there a way that I can do that?

Well, the info I provided is for duplicating a disc. If you need to make a backup of a disc those are the steps. If you want to simply store data on the disc the procedure is different. Can you give me a better idea of what you're trying to do? If the goal is to merely backup files to your external drive, then why are you trying to make disc images? Perhaps if I understood better what you want to accomplish I can provide better advice.

Happy New Year!

I'm trying to copy a DvD that I borrowed from a friend, but all that seemed to do was make a Disk Image. Then, in an effort to free up internal hard drive space, I bought the external HD, and was transferring all my 'unnecessary' files over to the external. You said that the instructions above were only for making a back up of a disk? I'm not sure I understand, but yeah, I was originally trying to copy a dvd movie, then burn it onto a blank cd-/dvd- to keep as my own copy. Please let me know what I am doing wrong, or if this is even possible to do...and thanks for the helpful info!

Yes, the procedure first makes a disk image. Then you have to burn the disk image to a blank DVD.

A "backup" copy is a duplicate of a distribution DVD. Some software producers permit you to make an archival copy of the distribution DVD.

As for what you're doing wrong I have no idea. I don't know what you are doing.

Ok, i've got as far as the last step of burning the image onto a blank disk. When I try that, I get an error saying "The inserted disk does not have enough free space". Ok, I get it. The movie is 7.1gb total, the disk( DVD-R8X) is only 4.7gb. Is there a way that I can get this to fit, maybe compressing it in a way that it will open and play on a home DVD player? Or maybe splitting the movie up into two parts?

You need double-layer discs if you have a writer that can write double-layer discs. If you don't have a double-layer writer then you cannot duplicate the discs. If these are commercial movie DVDs they also may have built-in copy protection.

If all you want to do is have a backup and you can't write a double-layer DVD, then you could use Stuffit to make a multi-part archive with each part being no larger than what will fit on a standard DVD. However, the movie will not be playable in this form.
