How do I find the file name for photos imported into PHOTOS app?

I want to be able to find the file name for photos I have imported into Photos app. I can find the photos, but when I click on the location of the files I just get thumbnail copies of the photos. I want the file name. The file name is useful when moving specific files to other locations, etc.

Any help appreciated.

The filename of a photo is shown in the Info panel. While viewing a photo enter ⌘I to open the Info panel.

if you want to see more metadata with your photos for several photos at once, you could use the free trial version of PowerPhotos (Fat Cat Software – PowerPhotos). It can show you your Photos Library in a list view with plenty of metadata or with more metadata below the thumbnails, and you can reveal the originals in the Finder.

Starting up PowerPhotos takes a long time, however. I simply keep it always open in the background as a companion to Photos.

For example:

Do the following;

1 - in the View ➙ Metadata menu check all of the metadata fields offered:

User uploaded file

2 - go to the Photos for Mac User Tips web page and get either of these scripts: Script: Changing the Title to the Filename without Extension or Script: Batch Changing the Titles to the Filename w/Extension.

The scripts compiled as applications can be downloaded from this tutorial site: P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications

3 - select a batch of photos and run the script/applicaiton. This will put the file name under the thumbnail for each photos.

Since the script can take time to process if your library is large I would process the photos in batches so the script won't time out during operation.

BUT

Now that you know the file name you MUST not move it as you want to - you need to forget about directg access and do it correctly as several people have oosted

it doesn't actually matter as the only way to move the file is by exporting them. So, find the photo and then export it (File -> Export...)

to use a file with another program there are three supported ways, export the phots (file menu ==> export), use themedia bowser the the desired program or us an extension like the External Editors for Photos (($0.99 in the App Store) to edit the photos within

Again to be sure it is very clear

With Photos the libary stucture is not designed for human use and depending on your settings the file you want may not even exist on disk - Do not go diredtly into the library - use the supported access methods

You must NEVER move a file within the Photos library - any change made to the contents of the library will cause problems

And with Photos for a number of reasons you should never directly access the files - to use a file with another program there are three supported ways, export the phots (file menu ==> export), use themedia bowser the the desired program or us an extension like the External Editors for Photos (($0.99 in the App Store) to edit the photos within
