I'm running Sierra on my Mac mini. In finder I use column view and it annoys me having to double click on the divider to display the full file name each time or drag the column to be larger.
Is there anyway to set the global preference for this to be displayed by default instead of the file name being shortened to for example big file **me.mp3

Open finder and its preferences > click on Advanced > check the box of Show all file name extensions .
This is a nice short video thanks, but the result is all columns being the SAME width.
However, I think the original question (by 'john120165') is asking - is there a way for a column to AUTOMATICALLY get wider if it contains a rather long file (or folder) name. I'd guess that, like me, he does NOT want ALL columns very wide when it's not necessary (ie. when all names in a column are shorter) because then it wastes screen space.
My solution is to use 'Xtrafinder' (but I'd rather apple just had the option included in Finder in the first place).
Xtrafinder gives the option to choose a setting called "Automatically adjust width of columns".
So when I am looking at multiple folders within folders in column view, it's great!
I get some narrow columns and some wider columns, as necessary. I never need to adjust column width manually!
In Column view hold the Option key while dragging the column to the desired length. After that the column length should be persistent.
Hovering your pointer over a truncated folder or filename will present a full, floating name in its place.
