Cannot get Windows 7 to install on a Macbook Pro 6,2

So, I've thrown up the white flag of defeat, I've tried everything I can possibly think of to install Windows 7 onto my Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15 inch, and nothing has resulted from it but over a week of headache and frustration.

So I started out by trying to make a USB bootable flash drive (yes I know my model doesn't support it, but my optical drive system is toast, I've replaced the OD twice and it still won't read) so I modified the info.plist file within the contents of BootCamp, under "PreUSBbootsupportedmodels" I changed to "USBbootsupportedmodels" and added my identifier. There is no "DARequiredROMversions" option listed. I am running OS X 10.12.4.

I managed to bypass Bootcamp and create my own BOOTCAMP partition with a allocated space of 300GB (I have a 750GB HDD) using DiskUtility, and even got it to boot from my USB Flash Drive (Labeled EFI Boot at startup after holding the Option key) and it starts up the Windows 7 Installer, and I get all the way to choosing the partition and when I click format it thinks for a second then a message comes back saying Windows cannot be installed to this partition because it is MBR partition system and windows can only be installed onto a GPT partition. I chose MS DOS (FAT) when formatting from Disk Utility, but it won't work. Someone said it does it because since my model is not USB supported, something else is preventing it from working during Windows installation.

So I tried creating a DVD (they don't make official W7 installation DVDs anymore, only ISO files) and I managed to have that disc show up in the start up list, so I chose it and restarted. It booted from the disc, started installation again, and ONCE again the same partition issue is preventing me from installing.

How can I make it recognize the partition as GPT? I've partitioned it myself with DiskUtility and with BootCamp and both times it refuses to recognize it as a GPT and reformat it to NTFS. Please help! I've tried everything I know to try and I need Windows on this laptop to do my work. I don't have the cash to upgrade to a non-optical drive Macbook so this is my only option!

Has anyone dealt with this and solved it?

Your 2010 model only supports Windows installations using legacy BIOS mode using the built-in Optical drive. It will not work with an external USB and/or external Optical drive.

EFI Boot will not work either, because all Macs prior to Late 2013 models are preUEFI.

Your best chance to install W7 is this link which allows a partial virtual disk to be cloned to a physical partition. Please check the link and ask questions.

As you have noted, over the years, EFI code has evolved. 2012-2014 Macs do support USB.

Apple chose not to support USB installation on older Macs for Windows, despite the fact that any EFI OS will still boot from a USB as noted in How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support . WXP, Vista and W7 had weak EFI support. W8 and W10 are much better at such support. Installing W7 via EFI on a Mac is a PITA, because a lot of Apple Hardware is not exposed correctly under preUEFI (EFI 1.x) code.

So I tried the method that you sent, over the weekend (I used my entire weekend at this) and at first VMware just kept crashing everytime I tried to attach the windows 7 iso file to it (and I know it works as I was able to reach windows setup, just not recognize the partition correctly.) so I found a similar method using Oracles Virtual Box, and alas, that too also kept having problems trying to attach the iso file. In the end, I ended up crashing my entire HDD and having to erase and reinstall OSX which is okay, I had planned on doing this until I got it, which means I already planned to crash the disk a few times, so I have 100GB of Google Drive that I backed up any important stuff on 🙂

So now with a fresh install, I'm going to attempt the same method again. I haven't reformatted this Mac in the 7-8 years I've had it, and it's been through ****. The first few months I had it my wife spilled a whole cup of coffee on it, essentially destroying everything but the HDD and the SuperDrive. So it's long overdue!

So if this method still doesn't work this time, I may look into replacing the paper thin SATA cable to the superdrive and replace it once more, but this time with a brand new superdrive (its a UJ898) as the last two times I replaced it with a "certified" used superdrive, but maybe they were DOA when I got them. I'll keep in touch as this is a HUGE problem for many Mac users with my model MacBook6,2 and I truly want to find a legitimate, one time fix for this. It's a shame Apple puts such huge, and a unnecessary restrictions on their computers. Just because I have a CD Drive doesn't mean they should make it where it's impossible to USB drive it or use an external drive to install. Things like this happen, but I suppose it's another way for them to make some more money off the end user by essentially forcing them to get another CD drive. I love OS X and I love Windows, but unfortunately both have their flaws. Had thought about using Linux as my secondary boot if windows won't work as the programs I need, a few run on linux as well and you can usb install linux on ANY OS X machine as it is compatible with the EFI thing.

I appreciate the help so far, at least this method I think may have more promise. I'm trying to install Windows due to the fact I need a laptop suited for my Astrophotography work, but most of the main applications I need to use are Windows only, and I had thought of using Linux (such as Ubuntu or Kubuntu) as they will boot via pre-UEFI methods using a USB stick, however only a couple of the software apps I need run on Linux too, so Windows would be the ideal choice, however, Windows 7 has been out the longest and seems to be the least buggy, with more updates to support it than W10, and W8/8.1 don't seem to be all that great for a professional setup, but what you are saying is that if I try W8 or W10 I may have a better chance at a USB bootcamp installation or just the partial virtual disk installation method? Just want to make sure I'm understanding you correctly. I'd like to use my Macbook instead of purchasing another laptop just for windows, as I know the hardware will be much faster and more HD space, as well as being able to simply switch between OS X and Windows whenever I need to. But I'm still trying some different methods for W7, even considering taking my MacBook Pro up the street to repair the CD drive, despite the expense, just to get it over with. But I will have to weigh the options between a repair that way, or just buying another laptop.

Just wanted to state that I FINALLY got Windows 7 onto my Mac via the Virtual Disk method you provided in the earlier link. I found out I had a corrupted Windows 7 .ISO which was causing VMware Fusion 8.5.6 to crash every time I tried to use it. I created a video that I will be posting with step by step instructions on how I managed to pull this off on my MacBook Pro 6,2 model. Thanks SO MUCH for all your help Loner T, I would've been lost had it not been for your earlier suggestion!

Yea no problem buddy! I actually recorded the filming like the same week I figured all the VM stuff out and got W7 installed onto my Mac. I forgot about all those clips until one day I decided to stop and clean out my iPhone 6 and 'viola there they are. So I downloaded them to my MacBook Pro via the Instashare app and boom you guys got it now :P But glad I could help and I couldn't have seen it through without you bro so thanks again!
