how to use a CAC reader on Mac 10.12.4

I am trying to use my CAC card on my personal MacBook Pro. I have MAC OS X 10.12.4 and am using IOGear GSR202 CAC reader, I am unable to log on to any dod website that requires CAC access and I am unable to figure out why. if there is a certified tutorial or process to do this that could point me in the right direction that would be great.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), macOS Sierra (10.12.4)
