Cannot log into iCloud on MacBook pro

Purchased a used MBP 2010 that came with Sierra installed. When I attempt to log into iCloud in Settings it just times out and does not log me in. I have verified my account login is working with iCloud on web and I can log into iTunes store. Suggestions?

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.5), Refurb MBP 2010
