unsupported image format - how to fix

This is a problem on my Sierra Mac Mini running Aperture 3.6, but it's happened on my iMac as well. Basically, I'm opening Aplibraries that are pre-3.6 and updating them. Images show up fine and then poof! they become those ugly black Unsupported Image Format and rebuilding libraries doesn't fix them = it's happened twice - on one vault and then on a library of the same content. Images were taken a few years ago and at one point were just fine - but now they no longer work.

Part of the problem is that some are referenced images [I HATE that concept] and I don't know where the originals are = it was 2 years ago or so and I just can't recall where the original images were saved - so can't figure out how to reconnect the referenced library to the originals. But that's regarding a different library = the problem has also happened in a managed library. And we're only talking about 600 images or so = not a huge library.

I rebuilt the library and also ran Disk Utility on the drive - as you can see, some are fine and others are not.User uploaded fileUser uploaded file

Have you tried to reprocess the RAW files in the library with the managed RAW files?

  1. Select one or more affected photos in the Browser.
  2. From the main menu, choose Photos > Reprocess Originals.
  3. In the Reprocess Photos window set the following options:
    • Set "Which photos do you want to reprocess?" to "All photos"
    • Set "Do you want new versions created for the reprocessed photos?" to "Reprocess existing images"

For the missing referenced files you may see the original path, where the referenced files have been , when you select one of the thumbnails and use the command "File > Locate referenced file". The upper part of the reconnect dialog should be showing the path below the thumbnail.
