How do I extend my formula when adding new rows?

Hi all,

I have a bunch of data in a table. Currently, I have a total sum, then a breakdown count of the data in the table. If I add rows to my table, these are not caught in my sum/countif formulas and I have to manually adjust them to cover the new rows. Is there a way I can change this so that the end of the column is fluid in the formulas?

These are how my formulas look right now:

Numbers has this nifty feature called Header Rows and Footer Rows. You can define the last row as a Footer Row (go to the drop down beside the row number at the left) and put your formula in that Footer Row. Instead of having the formula refer to a range within U have it refer to U, the whole column. That way the formula will automatically "expand" to include the new Rows.

Hi,

Have you considered putting your summary counts in a separate Summary table, which you can place above the Data table if that's where you need it? That way you can reference a whole column in the Data table and each formula will automatically include new data rows that you add. You can have far more than 15 counts if you need that.

You can see an example of how this works (using sums instead of counts) in the 'Personal Budget' template at File > New in your menu. The formulas in the 'Summary' table refer to whole columns in the 'Transactions' table.

(In general, if you find yourself referring to specific ranges in columns, as is common in Excel, you may not be taking full advantage of the table-centric design of Numbers, which makes it easy to have multiple tables positioned wherever you want on the canvas.)
