Etrecheck Poor performance; report attached

My MacBook Pro (2012) has been slow and misbehaving. I ran an Etrecheck and found that its performance was Below Average. I made some changes, but obviously messed it up worse. When I ran another Etrecheck it came back poor. On this one, the only red lines have to do with System Launch Agents and Daemons. I should say that I started this process because when I updated to Sierra it showed a massive amount of storage used for System--anywhere from 122 GB up, depending on what stupid things I did to the machine at any one time. It might be time to take the poor thing in to have it worked on, but it would be great if I could fix it myself--with your help, of course.

Hello lilybramble,

I agree with what everyone else is saying. The EtreCheck performance rating really does mean that "it took some time" to run the report. My assumption is that a modern, healthy machine should be able to run an EtreCheck report in 3-5 minutes. If you have an SSD, it might do it in 1.5-2 minutes. If it takes more than 10 minutes, something is wrong.

There aren't any obvious indicators in your EtreCheck report about what might be wrong. You did have some low RAM indicators. But even after restarting, your EtreCheck report still ran slow before you did anything to run low on RAM.

Before Sierra, there were some log files that EtreCheck could read to look for a failing hard disk. Sierra changed the logging system and now EtreCheck cannot give a definitive answer about a failing hard drive. We are back to using old-school guesstimate diagnostics. You have an older MacBook Pro with the original, mechanical hard drive. Those 2.5" hard drives tend to fail after 2-3 years. You are double that. It sure acts like a failing hard drive.

The good news is that on those older machines, replacing the hard drive is one of the fastest and easiest repairs you can make. I strongly suggest you replace the hard drive with an SSD. You will really notice the increase in performance. And since you have to open up the computer to replace the SSD, it sure wouldn't hurt to get more RAM too.

The best place to buy the parts is OWC: https://www.macsales.com/ They even have instructional videos and tool kits. If you aren't comfortable doing that repair yourself, I suggest finding an Authorized Apple Repair Service Centre. Don't go to an Apple Store for this. I don't think they will do this kind of out-of-warranty upgrade. Just find someone who is certified to repair Macs and will install an SSD for you. Check the OWC site above to see how much a 500 GB SSD and extra RAM should cost for your machine. Don't pay anymore much more than that. This is a 10 minute job for a professional.

May 17, 2017 2:26 PM in response to lilybramble

If you are inclined to replace the internal hard disk drive yourself, you can review OWC's instructional videos for your model Mac: https://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody_mid12_hd/

Memory might be a factor, but don't invest in more memory unless you determine that is justified. It's very easy to determine if your Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac will benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't.

I have Sierra on Macs with only 4 GB RAM. They run just fine, but it's only your Macs that matter to you. To install additional memory refer to Memory Upgrade Instructions in the (Apple) menu > About This Mac > Memory.

May 17, 2017 1:56 PM in response to lilybramble

Thanks Lily. To confirm a suspicion of hard disk failure, the remaining check that I suggest would be to set up and boot from an external drive. To do that read How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support.

From what you describe I am nearly certain that running Sierra from an external drive would work fine, and if that's the case you shouldn't bother doing anything to "repair" the internal one. Disk Utility might indicate a failure, or it might indicate everything is OK when it obviously is not.

Hard disk drives that have become unreliable cannot be fixed. You already have at least two backups of the data it contains, and that is by far the greater concern.

2. I ran a new Etrecheck, which looks about the same to me:

1. The 'About this Mac' report is practically worthless. DO NOT USE THAT for an indication on the disk storage (you can find many complaints here about how 'System' is massive - it is just a useless graph confusing people). OmniDiskSweeper or Finder are better tools but they do hide the size of files that you cannot access. When your Mac is better you can look at cleaning data, but first be sure your disk is OK.

2. Safe mode changes very little about the OS - it purges some system caches & disables third party extensions. The point is for you to test to see if the Mac has the SAME issues when in safe mode. If not then the disabled items could be the cause of your problem.

[These reports took about 10 minutes less so that's something I guess! EDIT: was looking at different thread! ]

It is difficult for Etrecheck to know how your system should perform so you have to be careful in assuming the performance rating means a lot beyond 'it took some time'.

Please repair the disk in Disk Utility as machack and John Galt mentioned. Post any errors that can't be fixed.

Your performance issues could be related to 2 things - lack of RAM, slow HD.

When the OS runs out of free memory it has to save that to the disk, unfortunately you have a slow spinning disk. Your disk is also quite full which decreases performance even more, that is explained at…

https://macperformanceguide.com/Storage-WhyYouNeedMoreThanYouNeed.html

It seems excessively slow so disk tests are the first one to look at.

P.S. I would remove Seagates app - I don't know why a disk needs to install drivers or other low level extensions. They need to be up to date if you need them (I don't know what is the latest version so I would remove as a test). Find instructions for uninstalling from Seagate - it has multiple pieces, some are kernel extensions (low level access to the hardware).

Also Akamai seems to be a peer to peer networking service that improves Akamai's network but does very little to benefit you? Look for how you remove that - maybe this covers it -https://www.akamai.com/us/en/products/media-delivery/netsession-interface-faq.js p

3. I tried to restart again, this time normally, but System Information would not quit. I tried Shut Down--same thing. I finally shut down by holding down the power button and then turned it back on. Start up was somewhat faster than in Safe Mode, and I ran yet another Etrecheck. (I hope this isn't excessive.) This time performance was still Poor, but the System Launch Agents and Daemons were running instead of failed. Is this significant, or am I still looking at a new hard drive?

Again, thank you very much for your prompt help. I can't tell you how nice it is to know I'm not out here in the wilderness alone.

Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to do that please read https://www.apple.com/support/backup/. To learn how to use Time Machine read Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac. The reason for creating a backup is that the symptoms you describe could be indicative of an impending hard disk drive failure, so securing your data is a primary concern.

Then, shut down your Mac and restart it in "Safe Mode". To learn how to do that please read Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac - Apple Support. Compare how your Mac works in Safe Mode to how it has been, and describe your observations in a reply to this Discussion.

Then, restart normally. If the same problem returns, please read the section If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode for Apple's recommended actions.

Finally, you can temporarily create a new User Account, and log in to that account to determine if the problem also exists when logged in to that Account. To learn how to do that read How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac. When you are finished troubleshooting, you can remove the temporary User Account by following these instructions: macOS Sierra: Delete a user or group. Before removing it, confirm you don't need any of the files you might have created in that Account.

Let me know what you determine.

Most likely, the results of the above troubleshooting will support a suspicion that your Mac's hard disk drive is operating in a state of failure, and must be replaced. With not just one but three redundant Time Machine backups, you are very well prepared for that contingency. One of them (the Time Capsule's, I imagine) is a little old though.

Since Sierra introduced a completely new logging system, I do not know of a reliable way to diagnose potential hard disk problems. Disk Utility will not suffice. Until I come across a disk in a state of failure yet operational enough to test I can't provide a means of extracting any applicable log entries that could definitively show those failures. A definitive conclusion could be drawn by installing Sierra on an external hard disk drive, booting from it, and determining if the symptoms are alleviated while running Sierra from that startup disk. To do that read How to set up and use an external Mac startup disk - Apple Support. If the external hard disk installation of Sierra works properly while the internal one does not, that is all the justification you need to replace the internal drive.

If necessary, hard disk drive replacement is not particularly difficult or expensive.
