How can I add my 5th gen iPod nano to my iTunes account?

I would like to delete my old iPod completely so that I can give it to my kids. I am trying to restore it to factory settings. When plugged into my USB, the iPod shows up in the left-hand column of iTunes under "devices". When I click on it, the only options it gives me are Eject, Sync, Transfer Purchases, and Reset Warnings. I cannot figure out how to add the device to my iTunes account (it's not listed under enabled devices when I go to "My account"), which I assume is what I need to do to get to the Summary panel, so I can then restore to factory settings from there. Please help, this is making me crazy!

Hello BeanerG,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are having an issue with restoring your iPod nano (5th Generation) in iTunes. To help resolve this issue, please follow these steps, including making sure iTunes is up to date:

Updating and Restoring iPod Software
You can use iTunes to update or restore iPod software. It’s recommended that you update iPod nano to use the latest software. You can also restore the software, which puts iPod nano back to its original state.
If you choose to update, the software is updated, but your settings and songs aren’t
affected.
If you choose to restore, all data is erased from iPod nano, including songs, videos, files, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod nano settings are restored to their original state.
To update or restore iPod nano:
1. Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/downloads.
Connect iPod nano to your computer.
2. In iTunes, select iPod nano in the device list and click the Summary tab.
3. The Version section tells you whether iPod nano is up to date or needs a newer version of the software.
4. Click Update to install the latest version of the software.
5. If necessary, click Restore to restore iPod nano to its original settings (this erases all data from iPod nano). Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.

Thanks for your reply jdo_apple. The problem is that I don't have a Summary tab as mentioned in the 2nd step above, which is why I think having it added to my iTunes account will help. When I click on My Account and Devices, neither of my old iPods are listed as being associated with my account. (And I don't think I would've deleted them so I'm not sure how it happened in the first place, but I guess that's beside the point right now.) Anyway, when I click on my iPod in the device list, the only options it gives me are eject, sync, transfer purchases and reset warnings. There is no way to get to the summary tab. And I checked that my iTunes is up to date. Any other wisdom for me? Thanks
