Next time, try holding down the option/alt key while clicking the green button at the top left.
Called Apple Support. Got a lady in Singapore! Shared my screen. The magic button was "escape" then right click on Mail. She also helped me open a zip file that another support yesterday could not do.
You need to slide the cursor up to the top of the screen until the little buttons appear on the left. You are in Full-screen mode, and you will need to get out of it. When you slide the cursor up, you will not only be able to see the three buttons, but you will see the menu options as well. Slide to the View option, then click on "Exit Full Screen" at the bottom of the dropdown under the View option.
Once you get out of Full-screen mode, you can click on the Yellow button to move your draft email to the Dock temporarily while you look at the Inbox, etc. Then click on the draft in the Dock to re-open it.

Shortcut Cmd q
As per the article : macOS Sierra: Manage windows on the desktop
Manually resize a window: Drag the window’s edge (top, bottom, or sides). Or double-click an edge to expand that side of the window.
Applicable in mail application also .
Problem is there is no buttons or anything at the top - just the To and so forth. Fills the entire screen. I got it down, but every time I try to click my mail, the compose full screen comes on and I cannot get to my mailbox. If I keep clicking around, it goes away and then I see my local mailbox, but now it is separating things with red shadows, when normally the "inbox" just shows what has come in. I have about 40 in the inbox, but now it shows I have 170 in red (that is what the sub boxes are totaling). I also went to preferences and could see nothing to "fix" or change.
There is no curser. Just the blinking insert to begin typing a message. I have restarted the computer. When I open Mail, the full screen compose comes on. Quitting Mail seems the only way to get it off my desktop. Guess I will call Apple. I have had one problem after another ever since I bought this expensive iMac. My old 14 year old Mac still runs without any of the new problems I've had with this one. Another thing I've complained about are some of my favorite shortcuts which are no longer available. Thanks for trying to help! I appreciate it.
Try some troubleshooting steps .

Nice to hear , it got resolved .
So frustating! Grrr
This does not work! Nothing does! I cannot even get to mail preferences!
Thank you! I kept clicking all over the place and finally everything was normal. Since it covered my 27 inch entire screen, there were no usual arrows to use.
Wait, when you move your finger on the trackpad (or use your mouse), you are not seeing the pointer? How are you quitting Mail in this situation?
