Brother 2270 wireless printer says filter failure

I have a MacBook Pro using OS 10.10.2. I recently had to stop using my router with a Brother 2270DW wireless printer. I followed directions from Brother to install new printer driver and use the printer through USB. My problem is the printer keeps saying "Filter Failure". Brother has no idea what this is referring to except something to do with Apple.

Does anyone know what this could possible be regarding? I would like to use my printer again regardless of connecting through USB.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), iPhone 6 plus

If you haven't done so already, try resetting the printing system.

I'm using OS Sierra but have the same problem with a Kodak Hero 3.1 printer. I've reset the printer system with no joy. I can print from the same printer if I use it as a shared printer with my MacBook, but, of course have to have that open too to do so.

Any thoughts?
