how do i get rid of phantom text messages

Every time one of my contacts texts me I get the notification but then it doesn't go away. It happens with only one person and when I receive the messages it adds one for each new message. I cannot delete the messages because they come back. This has been adding up for months and I now have over a thousand messages that it says are unopened
